Mentoring
Approach

Why do we believe having a social element in STEM education is better for learning? Integrating social collaboration into high school STEM learning enhances real-world application, promotes diverse perspectives, develops communication skills, increases engagement, encourages innovation, and cultivates critical thinking. It creates an inclusive and supportive learning environment, increasing motivation and excitement. Thus, we include a mentoring scheme in our coding program. Mentors offer real-world context, bridging the gap between theory and practice, providing individualized feedback, and fostering confidence, and social and collaborative skills development. At the same time, integrating students with the community.

To have a more holistic approach in STEM education, we use the larger framework of Positive Education as well as the Social Emotional Learning model for the adult-youth interactions in the mentoring scheme.

Positive education, utilizing the PERMA model, is valuable in developing cognitive, social, emotional, values, perspective, and non-cognitive skills among middle school students in STEM education. It fosters a positive mindset, meaningful relationships, emotional awareness, ethical values, diverse perspectives, and holistic skill development, enhancing their overall well-being and success in STEM disciplines.

Our mentoring scheme uses PERMA and SEL to enhance the following:

Cognitive

Creativity, problem-solving skills, self-learning skills

Social

Social awareness, conflict resolution, cooperative behaviour

Emotional

Emotional awareness, emotional regulation and management, resilience
